SPANISH COLONIAL & REPUBLICAN PERIODS

he Spanish Colonial period endured for over three hundred years, from the time of the Spanish invasion until independence in the 1820s. The Spanish imposed a shared language (Spanish) and religion (Catholicism) over their vast holdings in the Americas. European systems of political and social organization were instituted and European arts were taught and promoted. The Spanish destroyed, replaced, or assimilated elements of the original indigenous cultures.
